Sudhanshu “Suds” Jain is an incumbent member of the Santa Clara City Council. Suds is a well-respected climate champion in the region where he has played a leadership role advancing climate initiatives for a number of years. Suds was born in Delhi, India, and moved to California in 1963 with his parents. He is a retired engineer, high school robotics coach and city Planning Commissioner who runs his campaigns free of corporate money.
Suds makes a priority of educating the public on climate change through many means, including his training with Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, giving over 30 climate reality talks and creating and leading a weekly climate course for local middle school students. He served on the board of the environmental nonprofit Acterra for nine years, including two years as chair. He recognizes the importance of building decarbonization and switching to plant-based diets.
He championed the City’s Climate Action Plan and was instrumental in getting staff and council to agree to the 80 percent emissions reduction target by 2035. He also successfully pushed for Santa Clara to hire a full-time sustainability manager to advance the program. Suds has supported all-electric reach codes, requiring all new data centers to use 100% carbon-free renewable electricity.
