Measure J continues to generate critical funds for Fairfax.
Measure J is not a new tax, it is an extension of the sales tax voted in with 77% approval 10 years ago (set to expire), and includes a small, 0.25 % addition to the current tax (25c on each $100,). This money, used for the general fund, and securely owned by Fairfax (not touchable by Sacramento), is used to support Fairfax’s essential services such as public safety and emergency response, and for improving infrastructure such as repairing and repaving streets, The tax is subject to annual audits for accountability..
Why is 350 Bay Area Action endorsing?
While the money isn’t specifically directed to climate action, some funds support climate goals by nature (safe streets are bikeable streets for example), but more importantly, without these funds for basic services and infrastructure, it will be difficult if not impossible to think about deeper goals such as helping Fairfax meet its climate goals and create a sustainable town. Fairfax has made strides on climate action and has set ambitious goals to cut carbon and green the town. This tax generates 1.3 million dollars annually to take care of basics. Fairfax already has budget challenges, and with a loss of these fund it will face budget shortfalls that will lead to harder choices.
Please vote Yes on Measure J.
