Janani Ramachandran is a public servant, attorney, and mother who believes in the power of storytelling to shine a light on Oakland’s cultural landscape. A professional R&B singer and student of classical Indian music, Janani brings a unique creative lens to her leadership, whether she is founding the nonprofit Tiger Arts to celebrate community traditions or serving as the youngest person ever elected to the Oakland City Council. Her deep roots in the community inform her commitment to uplifting the voices of creatives, small business owners, and the diverse residents of District 4.
Janani has established herself as a leading voice for environmental justice in Oakland. As vice chair of the East Bay Wildfire Coalition, she has been at the forefront of wildfire prevention and conservation efforts. Her commitment to a just transition is reflected in her legislative track record—she has championed the “Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act,” advocated for the decarbonization of Oakland’s building codes, and pushed for the Reusable Foodware Ordinance. A steadfast ally to the community, she refuses to take contributions from fossil fuel corporations, ensuring her leadership remains untainted by the interests of the very industry driving the climate crisis.
As a councilmember, Janani’s vision for Oakland is one of pragmatism and ethical leadership. She aims to secure the funding necessary to expand BART and AC Transit, ensuring that public transportation is a viable, accessible option for all. She supports expanded EV charging infrastructure in all neighborhoods and supports infill, transit-oriented housing and seamless transit. By balancing her role as finance chair with a passion for the environment, Janani is dedicated to building an Oakland that is powered by clean energy, anchored in fiscal responsibility, and designed for the thriving of every resident.
