350 Bay Area Action endorses Berkeley’s Measure GG.
Fewer than 2% of Berkeley’s buildings are generating almost a quarter of the city’s methane (natural gas) releases. Measure GG assesses a special tax on the city’s largest methane-polluting buildings – buildings 15,000 square feet or larger. The measure is designed to target large, gas-burning commercial buildings and not homes of resident homeowners and renters.
Measure GG is expected to do two things: incentivize the biggest buildings to lower their carbon emissions, and raise about $26.7 million a year for a Just Transition Fund to help all Berkeley residents be a part of the transition off of fossil fuels. The measure provides for an oversight committee to make sure funds are spent on climate action.
350 Bay Area Action joins a large group of endorsing organizations, including California Climate Voters, Physicians for Social Responsibility SF Bay Chapter, The Sunflower Alliance, The Sunrise Movement Bay Area, and many others.
