350 Bay Area Action is pleased to endorse Sonja Shephard for Pittsburg City Council. Sonja’s extensive work in service of her community reflects a strong commitment to the City of Pittsburg and the well-being of its residents. She belongs to the Pittsburg Unified School District Student Attendance Review Board, the City of Pittsburg Community Advisory Commission, and serves on a newly formed joint council of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission operating at the intersection of transit and land use, housing, and environmental justice policy.
A desire to “create a city that is led by members of the community” animates Marisol Rubio’s campaign for reelection to the San Ramon City Council. This vision is bolstered by her commitment to environmental stewardship. Marisol has served on the Executive Committees of the Tri-Valley, San Francisco Bay Area, and California chapters of the Sierra Club, and chaired the Dublin San Ramon Services District/East Bay Municipal Utility District Recycled Water Authority.
Having first been elected to San Anselmo’s Town Council in 2019, and currently serving as Mayor, Steve Burdo is justifiably proud of the town’s commitment to climate action. “Our town’s Climate Action Plan goes far beyond what most towns/cities have, if they even have one.” The plan lays out specific measures to achieve a 54% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2045, including transportation electrification and renewable-energy expansion, while incorporating adaptation measures for wildfires, flooding, and heat waves.
A third-generation Californian, Susan Adams’ commitment to the quality of life in the Bay Area goes far beyond her enjoyment of winemaking and swing dancing. From 2005 through 2020, Susan worked as a staff attorney for the Bay Area Air District, helping communities adversely impacted by poor air quality resulting from oil refineries and other activities that release air contaminants. She led enforcement actions against polluters for air-quality violations and took the lead on drafting regulations to reduce or eliminate air contamination and improve air quality.
Charlene Wang brings a wealth of public service experience along with the perspective of an East Bay native to her campaign for reelection to Oakland’s city council. After graduating from Columbia University—with a degree in environmental engineering—and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, she stayed on the East Coast for some time, crafting health care, transportation, and housing policy for local elected officials and the federal government; this period also included a stint at the Environmental Protection Agency, where she worked in pursuit of environmental justice.
