As a long-term Bay Area resident, Rebecca Saltzman shows great interest in advancing alternative transportation measures to support the green goals of the state of California. She has specific plans for expanding walking and biking trails, bus schedules, and making the retail corridors car-free (with other options more readily available).
As a director on the BART board for over 10 years, she has supported low-income fare vouchers and adding affordable housing near BART stations so that transit is readily available to people who are ready to live and work in this community. In this effort, she has supported using BART-owned land for future housing. A problem-solver with a long view, Saltzman has homed in on the financial aspects of the system: increasing reserves in view of future trust obligations and securing federal monies for expansions and improvements.Â
But it’s not all about the money—Saltzman spearheaded efforts that brought the Progressive Policing Bureau to BART, to assist the homeless or persons in crisis, who frequent BART stations. She has been BART board president twice, has chaired the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority Board and BART-AC Transit Interagency Liaison Committee, and currently chairs the BART Audit Committee.
Saltzman’s transit-focused work has been enhanced by her being Development Director for Bike East Bay, a group that advocates for greater safety for bike riders and increasing the number of car trips replaced by biking and/or walking.
She has also spent seven years as manager/interim Executive Director for the California League of Conservation Voters, a group of over 100 organizations with goals for environmental, health and social justice agendas, to promote their interests with California’s governing bodies. In 2011, Saltzman received the League of Women Voters of Oakland’s Making Democracy Work Award in recognition of her work and commitment to increasing citizen engagement in local government.Â
