South San Francisco City Council District 4 Candidate James Coleman

James is the current mayor of South San Francisco, elected in 2020. He is the youngest-ever city council member and serves on the board of directors for both Peninsula Clean Energy and the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club.

James first became involved in politics through climate change and environmental advocacy in high school. He then cofounded the Harvard Undergraduates for Environmental Justice and successfully worked with Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard to divest the university of its $40 billion endowment from the fossil fuel industry.

In South San Francisco, he led efforts to pass an all-electric reach code for new building construction and create a new Climate Action Plan as well as a bike/pedestrian master plan. He supports additional reach codes for new building construction, burnout ordinances for existing buildings, and the Air Quality Management District’s “zero NOx” rules to phase out polluting methane gas appliances. James wants to see continued investment in technologies that lower the cost of electric alternatives and supports rebates, zero-interest loans, and other financial programs to help transition lower-income households and businesses to become all-electric.

James recognizes that in the transition away from fossil fuels, it is essential to ensure that low-income communities have access to job training programs that allow them to work in well-paid clean energy jobs.
