350 Bay Area Action is excited to endorse climate champion Kate Harrison for Berkeley mayor.Â
Kate won the 2021 Trailblazer’s Award from the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Sierra Club for her work in writing and passing the first-in-the-nation building electrification mandate for new construction. This ordinance has been followed in one form or another by about 300 states and municipalities, with 70 in California alone.Â
Kate has a strong background in policy work. She has worked as a consultant on justice systems and the international rule of law in California and around the world. She has also served on multiple Berkeley commissions and projects, such as the Waterfront Commission, the Downtown Streets and Open Space Improvement Project, and the Mayor’s 2050 Infrastructure Task Force; she then served seven years on the city’s council.Â
But wait–we can share even more about her work and accomplishments:
- Kate has worked both on climate change and climate justice, finding federal dollars to support a Just Transition Fund to help low-income residents make electrification, efficiency and weatherization upgrades.Â
- She’s worked on improving Berkeley’s plastic bag ordinance, making EV chargers available to multi-family home residents, ensuring the city’s Uber & Lyft tax uses money for transit, biking and pedestrian upgrades, moving Berkeley onto 100% green energy, and adding two youth representative spots to the Environment and Climate Commission.Â
