Brisbane City Council At-Large Candidate Coleen Mackin

Coleen is a current city council member in Brisbane who is very strong on climate in her policy roles and in her personal life. In addition to serving on the Brisbane city council, she represents the city at the Association of Bay Area Governments, the League of California Cities, and the board of Peninsula Clean Energy.

Coleen has pushed for numerous efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change in Brisbane and regionally, including:

  • Leading efforts to adopt decarbonization building “reach codes”
  • Supporting low-income electrification efforts and rebates to customers through Peninsula Clean Energy, including a comprehensive Customer Service Center to alleviate customer anxieties about electrification
  • Successfully pushing for a study to assess sea level rise impacts to Brisbane
  • Addressing increasing fire risk with insurers and policyholders, pushing for wildfire abatement plans, and advocating for a Community Fire Hardening Group
  • Regular reporting to residents about energy / electrification issues
  • Engaging in regional forums such as Sustainable San Mateo County and the county-coordinated Regional Climate Action Planning efforts

Looking ahead, Coleen would like to see an additional tax on the sale of any gas appliance, to create a fund assisting low-income residents in replacing aged gas appliances with more efficient electric ones.
