Cupertino City Council At-Large Candidate Rod Sinks

Rod is a long-time climate champion who formerly served on the Cupertino council for eight years, including serving as mayor. Most notably, Rod provided instrumental leadership for the formation of Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE), the region’s community choice energy provider. He then served as the founding chair of SVCE, which has delivered major advances in decarbonization, in moving the electric supply to renewables, and in implementing clean energy programs. Rod has built on this work by traveling across the state to meet with other electeds, encouraging the formation of community choice agencies such as SVCE.

In his professional career, Rod held engineering management roles, and helped lead two high tech start-ups from infancy to successful businesses. He founded the Cupertino Rotary Climate Action Committee and chaired the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Board (BAAQMD, or “the Air District”), which oversees air quality and climate mitigation strategies across the nine-county Bay Area region.

As chair of the Air District, Rod supported the development of the “zero NOx” rules to phase out polluting methane gas use. Rod also supports transit-oriented development and wants to improve the governance and effectiveness of Bay Area transit agencies.
