At its heart, climate is an issue of social justice; people who are suffering the most from climate impacts have done the least to cause increasing climate disasters worldwide and in the U.S. Oakland Councilmember Carroll Fife is a force for social justice, standing up for the people in West Oakland, who have long suffered from air, water, and soil pollution caused by years of redlining and neglect.
Councilmember Fife is a solid fighter against the long-discussed, and long-resisted, proposal to build a coal export terminal in West Oakland. With the retirement of two climate champions on the Oakland City Council–Rebecca Kaplan and Dan Kalb–Carroll’s role as a leader on this issue is vital.
Councilmember Fife has decades of public service as a non-profit director and community organizer. As one of the founding members of Moms for Housing, Carroll has fought both in the halls of power and in the streets to protect the human right to housing.
On the environment, she says, “It is within our means to design our urban spaces thoughtfully in order to advance sustainable goals, address climate change, and improve quality of life, while also repairing the harms of systemic racism that still exist today.”
