Richmond City Council D1: Melvin Willis

Having grown up in Richmond, Melvin Willis understands the ins and outs of the public school system, housing issues, and injustices caused by the Chevron refinery in Richmond.

Melvin has pledged not to take campaign money from any corporations and developers, thus ensuring his commitment to the people of Richmond. In his own words: “My commitment is to work with you to increase affordable housing, to improve wages and skills, to protect the environment, to secure a local hospital, and to expand opportunities for youth.”

Melvin has been a city council member since 2016, and in this role he has supported and voted for many climate actions, keeping equality and support for vulnerable communities at the forefront. Some of these actions are:

  • Ensuring accountability from Chevron, both in reducing their harm to the environment and community and paying their fair share of taxes;
  • Supporting efforts and policies that promote the equitable decarbonization of commercial and residential buildings;
  • Supporting a resolution calling on the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors to ban new oil and gas drilling, as well as phase out existing infrastructure and developments related to oil and gas drilling;
  • Providing pathways to green workforce opportunities for displaced refinery workers; and
  • Rejecting a proposed luxury housing development at Point Molate that would have threatened Ohlone sacred sites, osprey nesting sites, and a 50+ acre eelgrass bed.

350 Bay Area Action is happy to endorse for re-election to Richmond City Council, District 1.
