Sharon Lai has extensive experience in the public and private sectors. For example, she has worked for 10 years in municipal urban planning, including eight years in San Francisco’s Planning Department. She served as an appointed commissioner with the Treasure Island Development Authority and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Association (SFMTA) Board, where she worked to advance safety and electrification.
She was an endorser and active committee member for several 2022 city propositions which were crucial for public transit; for one of them (Prop A, the Transit GO Bond) she was a founding member of the ballot measure committee and interim principal officer for the committee.
In her most recent job in the private sector, she worked to help climate hardware companies solve regulatory hurdles, and provide technical and financial assistance to sustainability technologies. Some of the companies she supported are in water waste and consumption, sustainable construction, and curbside EV charging.
As a candidate, she has made support for public transportation and pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure one of the key objectives of her campaign, building on her experience on the SFMTA Board. She sees advocating for low-income and marginalized communities as central to her mission, if elected as a Supervisor. Accordingly, she wants to lead on implementing the city’s Climate Action Plan first in areas disproportionately affected by toxic emissions, and supporting programs that educate low-income households about low-cost electrification and weatherization. Her extensive experience in the public and private sectors in San Francisco should make her well-qualified to implement these goals.
