Dean Preston was elected Supervisor for District 5 in November 2019 and reelected in 2020. Dean has lived in District 5 for 30 years. Dean is a public school parent, an everyday Muni rider, a former small business owner, and an affordable housing advocate. Prior to taking office, Dean worked as a tenant attorney and founded California’s only statewide tenant organization.Â
Dean’s support for the climate is an integral component of much of his work, particularly support for public transit and active transportation; affordable city housing; and ensuring that the City appoints climate justice champions and people from environmentally-vulnerable communities to relevant positions. As Chair of the Government Audit and Oversight Committee, he worked to respond to the Civil Grand Jury Report on the Hunters Point Shipyard cleanup, and supported independent community oversight.
Dean’s support for public financing of clean energy and electrification stands out. He supported San Francisco’s community choice energy program, CleanPowerSF, as a Commissioner on the Local Agency Formation Commission that championed it. He is currently championing legislative efforts to create a public bank to invest in affordable housing, green infrastructure, and small business.
