Kurt Johnson is a climate champion who has worked in renewable energy and climate action for most of his life.
Kurt has held many leadership positions, from being a founder of a renewable energy project development consulting firm to serving as the chair of the San Anselmo Climate Action Commission. He was at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 11 years, where he founded the EPA renewable energy program, the Green Power Partnership.
As a former chair of the San Anselmo Climate Action Commission, Kurt was instrumental in writing the town climate plan and EV plan, and advocating for the Town Hall solar microgrid. The microgrid will be completed in 2025, reducing San Anselmo’s energy bills and providing clean emergency back-up power.Â
For the past five years Kurt has worked as the Community Energy Resilience Director at The Climate Center in Santa Rosa. In this role, he has been leading the development of a bi-directional EV charging bill (SB59), which recently passed in the California Assembly and is headed to the Governor’s desk for signature.
Aso active in climate justice, Kurt has successfully created a Microgrid Equity Coalition that was able to secure a California Public Utilities Commission grant to fund microgrids in disadvantaged communities, which bear the brunt of the climate crisis.
