San Francisco Board of Supervisors District 1 Candidate Connie Chan

SF District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan was born in Hong Kong and moved to San Francisco at the age of 13 with her mother and younger brother. She started her career as a volunteer interpreter and as a community organizer for the Youth Center. Connie has worked in city government as a legislative aide to the SF district attorney and SF supervisors (she led the legislative efforts to shut down the last power plant within city limits, which was hurting neighboring communities of color) and has held administrative roles at the SF Rec & Parks Department and City College of SF. Her website says she “understands that it’s not just important to pass good laws, but equally important that they be implemented equitably in order to serve all San Franciscans.”

Connie’s climate work as a supervisor is described on her website, and 350 SF has worked with her on most of these efforts:

  • The authoring and passing of an ordinance banning oil extraction from land that San Francisco owns;
  • As chair of the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo), a body that has oversight authority of CleanPowerSF, she helped to make possible independent studies for green bank financing, natural gas decommissioning, battery storage, electric vehicle charging, and emerging clean energy technologies to support CleanPowerSF and meet the City’s climate goals;
  • The co-sponsoring of legislation to establish business and governance plans for the non-depository Municipal Finance Corporation and for a public bank; and
  • As chair of the Board of Supervisors Budget Committee in 2023, she supported funding efforts to create the Climate Equity Hub and funding for the Department of Environment.

Connie Chan has been an effective advocate for climate solutions and environmental justice throughout her career, especially as a San Francisco supervisor. We endorse Connie for a second term as District 1 Supervisor.
