The Future of Democracy is at Stake with Another Trump Presidency

"You Won't Have to Vote Anymore"

Republicans are broadly planning to undermine upcoming elections, starting this fall. At a recent conservative Christian conference, Trump announced: “Four more years, it’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians.” This chilling statement is another sign that a second Trump administration would push the US toward an authoritarian government—and the world toward climate disaster.

Getting Out the Vote Has Never Mattered More

Every Vote Counts If We Are To . . .

Defeat Trump and MAGA Republicans

In 2024, our top priority is defeating Trump and MAGA Republicans to safeguard our democracy and freedoms, protect our planet, support climate justice, and ensure the rights, health, and well-being of all. The best way to protect the environment is to ensure that Donald Trump does not win a second term, while also securing a Democratic majority in the House and increasing the Democratic majority in the Senate. We must elect candidates at all levels who will enact strong laws to tackle climate change.

Secure a Democratic Majority

To secure a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress, another priority of our efforts is influencing California House races. California remains one of the most crucial swing states in 2024, and fortunately, we have promising Democratic candidates who can flip seats from Republican to Democrat. These candidates include Adam Gray (CA-13), Rudy Salas (CA-22), George Whitesides (CA-27), Will Rollins (CA-41), and Derek Tran (CA-45). Additionally, we must ensure the victory of David Min (CA-47), who is running for Katie Porter’s seat.

Elect Climate Champions

In addition, we are committed to supporting climate champions running in down-ballot races. State and local roles significantly impact climate-related decisions that affect individuals, local jurisdictions, and frontline communities. We endorse climate-friendly candidates for every elected office, from State Legislatures to Boards of Supervisors and City Councils. Find out more about the 350 Bay Area Action endorsements.

GOTV to Protect the Climate

Ensure Project 2025 Doesn’t Reverse Progress Toward Reaching Climate Goals

The Trump/Republican battle plan, Project 2025, outlines drastic anti-climate initiatives:

  • Eliminating regulations that protect the environment
  • Dismantling the Environmental Protection Agency
  • Opening up public lands to oil and natural gas drilling
  • Reducing funding and tax incentives for wind energy, solar energy, energy-efficient buildings, and electric vehicles

We Must Defeat Trump to Maintain Climate Progress

The Biden-Harris Administration has done more for the environment, through both legislation and executive action, than any previous presidency. Although much more is needed, voters have a stark choice between Democrats and Republicans.

The Biden-Harris Administration’s accomplishments include:

  • Embracing the goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by midcentury, to stabilize global temperatures (the first administration to take this step).
  • Signing into law the Inflation Reduction Act—the most consequential climate legislation in history.
  • Rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement (after Trump had withdrawn the US from it).
  • Signing an executive order directing every federal agency to work toward “environmental justice for all” and establishing a new national Office of Environmental Justice to oversee this.
  • Helping win the unanimous agreement of all United Nations member states to call for a global transition from fossil fuels.
  • Launching the “America the Beautiful initiative,” a ten-year campaign to conserve 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030.

In addition to these specific initiatives, it’s clear that under Trump, the US will shift from collaborating and sometimes leading on global climate efforts to undermining and reversing progress.

GOTV to Protect Democracy

Trump’s Supreme Court Has Done Tremendous Damage to Democracy

The president who wins in November may see and be able to fill one or two Supreme Court vacancies – so the Republican majority could either expand under Trump, or be kept as is or reduced by Harris, the presumptive nominee for president. The current Supreme Court majority has already undermined environmental action and drastically reduced US citizens’ rights by:

  • Overturning the Chevron deference, which required judicial respect for the actions of regulatory agencies. This ruling will make it much easier for opponents to revoke regulations that aim to curb emissions, protect air and water from pollution, and safeguard the health and safety of our people and planet, among other desirable goals.
  • Issuing the Dobbs ruling, thereby eliminating protection for reproductive rights at the Federal level, impacting tens of millions of women across the US.
  • Granting presidential immunity from the law—immunity that is already gutting current legal cases against Trump, and gives any President much freer rein going forward and greater scope to commit crimes, including crimes committed to undermine future elections.

Project 2025 Aims to Destroy Democracy and Take Away Civil Rights and Our Freedoms:

  • Allowing the military to be called in for domestic law enforcement.
  • Directing the Department of Justice to pursue Trump’s adversaries.
  • Creating a national abortion ban.
  • Allowing prosecution of both senders and receivers of mifepristone (abortion pills).
  • Rescinding LGBTQ+ regulations prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender status, sex characteristics, etc.
  • Deporting millions of immigrants.
  • Setting up large-scale internment camps for immigrants and homeless people.
  • Instilling Christian Nationalism into government and public life; the plan implements Christian Nationalist goals and “recognizes America as a Christian nation,” which the Constitution forbids.
  • Reinstating Executive Order Schedule F from the first Trump term, reclassifying thousands of federal employees and allowing the administration to fire employees who don’t follow the extremist policies suggested by Project 2025.
  • Infringing on personal and civil rights more broadly, taking away freedoms that all Americans enjoy.
